ESA Spark Backs APO-GEE to Improve Reliability of Machine-Tool Spindles Bearings

APO-GEE, the deep-tech start-up based in Belgium, specialized in innovative ball bearing engineering, announces that it has been selected for a phase 1 project within the ESA Spark Funding open call

The Spark Funding initiative aims to support and accelerate technology transfer between space and non-space sectors and advance product development.

The project involves strengthening the technology transfer of the Butterfly cage developed to solve the problem of cage instability in space applications, towards a ball bearing cage that improves machining accuracy and resolves the issue of “rattling noise” in machine tool spindles.

The persistent rattling noise in machine tool spindle bearings has long been a disruptive challenge due to a lack of understanding and its unpredictable nature. APO-GEE has made a breakthrough by not only identifying the phenomenon but also developing a new cage that effectively addresses the issue. This innovation improves spindle performance and marks a significant advancement in precision engineering.

APO-GEE thanks ESA, Belspo, and Verhaert for their support and trust in APO-GEE’s technologies.
